View drug authorizations
Drug authorization is the process we use to review the medication prescribed by your health practitioner.
There are 2 types of authorizations.
- Drug special authorization is required when the medication is covered if you meet the eligibility criteria.
- Drug price authorization is required when eligible medication costs more than what your plan will pay.
How it works
Prescribing health practitioner submits request
If your health practitioner has prescribed a medication that requires authorization, they'll need to complete a form. It's their responsibility to submit it to Alberta Blue Cross® for review.
We provide status updates
Once your prescribing health practitioner submits the request, we'll share updates by email. You can also find details about the status of your request when you sign into your account.
How long it takes us to review
It takes us about 10 to 14 business days to review your request. Once the review is complete, we'll notify you about our decision.
How to view drug authorizations in your account
These options will only appear if we have an authorization on file.
- Go to Benefits and select Drug coverage.
- Select the Special authorization or Price authorization tab.
