How the Blue Choice® plan works
Blue Choice® is a medically underwritten plan, which means you'll answer a few questions about your medical history. If you qualify, you'll have access to our highest level of prescription drug coverage and long-term protection.
Individuals and families age 64 and under can apply for this plan. Once accepted, coverage continues past age 65.
Customize your plan by choosing the level of coverage that works best for each category of extended health, optional dental and prescription drugs. Your choices apply to everyone on your plan.

Choose the right level of everyday care
Select the level of coverage for all benefits under extended health. Your chosen levels apply to everyone on your plan.
- What do you or your family use most today? Consider the services you use regularly, like massage, physiotherapy or vision.
- What's ahead? Plan for any upcoming health or lifestyle changes for you or your family.
- How often do you go? If you see certain providers often, a higher level of coverage may make sense.
We recommend starting with the lowest level that fits your needs today. You'll have the flexibility to increase your levels anytime, effective the 1st of the next month, and the option to downgrade after 24 months.
Add dental coverage if you need it
Select the level of coverage for optional dental or opt out if you don’t need it. Your chosen levels apply to everyone on your plan.
- What services does your family need?
- If you typically go for routine checkups, once or twice a year, consider starting with Basic or Enhanced.
- If you anticipate fillings, extractions, root canals or dentures in the next year or 2, consider a higher level of coverage to plan ahead, especially with the waiting periods.
- Consider the annual maximum limits: Each level has a yearly maximum payout and it may increase after your first year with some levels.
- Know the waiting periods. Basic and preventive dental benefits have a short initial waiting period before coverage begins. Other dental services may have longer waiting periods.
- Dental claims are paid according to the Alberta Blue Cross® Individual Health Plan Usual and Customary Dental Fee List. This means coverage is based on standard fees for common procedures. Learn more about dental benefits and ways to reduce your costs.
We recommend starting with the lowest level that fits your needs today. You'll have the flexibility to increase your levels anytime, effective the 1st of the next month, and the option to downgrade after 24 months.
Choose the level of prescription drug coverage you need
Select the level of coverage for prescription drugs. Your chosen levels apply to everyone on your plan.
- Do you want direct billing? Direct billing allows the pharmacy to bill Alberta Blue Cross directly, meaning you don’t pay out of pocket first. Both Enhanced and Enhanced+ levels include direct billing.
- Do you have high existing prescription drug costs? You may be eligible for additional coverage. Reach out through our contact form or call us at 1-800-394-1965 to discuss options.
We recommend starting with the lowest level that fits your needs today. You'll have the flexibility to increase your levels anytime, effective the 1st of the next month, and the option to downgrade after 24 months.
